What is Akkermansia muciniphila?

Akkermansia muciniphila is a Gram-negative, strictly anaerobic gut bacterium of the phylum Verrucomicrobia, first described at Wageningen University in 2004. Its defining trait is the ability to use the mucin layer covering the intestinal epithelium as its sole carbon and nitrogen source; it is a prominent member of the healthy adult gut microbiota.

It leads the list of "next-generation probiotic" candidates: the scientific literature intensively investigates its relationship with gut barrier integrity and metabolic parameters, and both the live and the pasteurised (parabiotic) forms have been studied in clinical trials. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated pasteurised A. muciniphila as a novel food.

Applications

Metabolic-health supplement formulations are the primary use case, positioned in capsules and sachets as single-ingredient products or combined with polyphenol ingredients. It is also used in microbiome-focused functional food development and research-grade culture requests. As a strict anaerobe, the live form requires process support, which we provide; the pasteurised form offers a wider formulation space without oxygen sensitivity.

Technical properties and stability

Supplied as a lyophilised powder in low oxygen- and moisture-permeability packaging. Because the organism is strictly anaerobic, cold chain and low water activity are critical for the live form; the pasteurised form, being heat-inactivated, has a considerably broader stability profile. Every batch ships with a certificate of analysis (CoA) covering viability (live form), identity confirmation and microbiological safety.

Formulation notes

For the live form we recommend in-capsule oxygen scavengers and blister packaging; liquid matrices are not recommended. The pasteurised form is flexible across tablets, sachets and functional food matrices.
