What is Lactiplantibacillus plantarum?

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum) is a facultatively heterofermentative lactic acid bacterium found widely in fermented foods and the human digestive tract. It carries one of the largest known lactobacillus genomes; this genetic flexibility underpins its adaptability and its "nomadic" lifestyle across habitats.

It holds QPS status with EFSA and GRAS status in the United States. Thanks to its tolerance of gastric acid and bile salts, wide pH range and strong environmental resilience, it is among the most frequently selected species for both probiotic and starter culture applications.

Applications

A core component of single- and multi-strain supplement formulations. On the food and beverage side it serves as a starter in fermented vegetable products, sourdough and functional beverages. Its heat-inactivated parabiotic form suits matrices where viability is not required, and its postbiotic lysates are used in cosmetic formulations. It is also a suitable candidate for feed additive applications.

Technical properties and stability
