What is Saccharomyces boulardii?

Saccharomyces boulardii, isolated from lychee fruit in Indochina in the 1920s, is the only yeast species used as a probiotic. Being a yeast rather than a bacterium makes it unique in the probiotic world: it is unaffected by antibiotics and can be used alongside antibiotic therapy.

With more than fifty years of clinical use and a strong body of meta-analyses on antibiotic-associated digestive complaints, it is among the microorganisms with the strongest literature support. Optimal growth at 37°C is the physiological trait that sets it apart from other yeasts.

Applications

Digestive-health and travel-concept supplements are its main field; it is a reference ingredient in antibiotic-period support products. In combinations with bacterial probiotics it serves as the yeast component, and it also finds broad use as a feed additive.

Technical properties and stability

In lyophilised form it shows remarkable room-temperature stability — an advantage for product concepts without cold chain. Its natural resistance to antibiotics gives formulation flexibility in combination products. Batches ship with a CoA covering viability and purity.

Formulation notes

Widely used in capsules, sachets and powdered drinks; with adequate moisture control it can also be considered for effervescent products. It can be formulated in the same capsule as bacterial strains. Yeast-allergy labelling should be assessed per local regulation; dose ranges reference the clinical literature.
