What is Bacillus subtilis?

Bacillus subtilis is a Gram-positive, endospore-forming bacterium ubiquitous in soil and on plant surfaces. It is one of microbiology's best-characterised model organisms; its genetics, enzyme production and spore biology have filled textbooks for half a century.

The endospore gives the species extraordinary resilience: stability against heat, gastric acid, desiccation and long storage that vegetative bacteria cannot match. Selected probiotic strains undergo whole-genome safety screening.

Applications

Thanks to spore stability it is one of the few probiotics usable in functional food and beverage applications, including heat-treated matrices. It has broad use in supplements under digestive and immune concepts, in poultry and aquaculture feed, and in agriculture as biofertiliser and biocontrol input. Its enzyme production capacity adds value in fermentation applications.

Technical properties and stability

In spore form it offers shelf life measured in years at room temperature, with no cold chain. It withstands many process conditions including baking and pelleting — upper temperature limits are verified per batch on the CoA.

Formulation notes

Suitable for demanding matrices such as bakery, hot-fill beverages and pelleted feed. Fully compatible with capsule, tablet and effervescent formats. Spore germination dynamics should be evaluated per product concept; our formulation team supports process validation.
