What is Bacillus coagulans?

Bacillus coagulans (Heyndrickxia coagulans in current taxonomy) is one of the rare bacteria that both produce lactic acid and form spores — combining the metabolic profile of lactobacilli with the resilience of bacilli. This dual character makes it one of the most practical probiotic species to formulate.

Numerous randomised clinical trials have been published on digestive comfort and bowel complaints; selected strains hold GRAS status in the United States. It is the best-known species of the spore-probiotic category internationally.

Applications

Digestive-health supplements are its main field. Spore stability also enables functional foods, hot beverages, protein products and bakery applications — opening product categories inaccessible to live vegetative probiotics. It is also suitable for feed additive use.

Technical properties and stability

In spore form it offers long room-temperature shelf life with no cold chain. Resilience to high-temperature and high-pressure processes is documented per batch on the CoA. Passing the stomach in spore form and germinating in the intestine is the species' core advantage.

Formulation notes

Formulates across a wide range including protein powders, granola/bar products, hot-fill beverages and bakery matrices. It withstands tablet and effervescent production pressures and humidity. Dosing should follow the strains and CFU levels used in the reference clinical trials.
