What is Bifidobacterium longum?

Bifidobacterium longum is a Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium and one of the core species of the human gut. It is among the few species that persist in the microbiota from infancy through old age — earning it the description of a "lifelong companion".

In the literature it sits at the centre of gut-brain axis research: its short-chain fatty acid production and its relationship with the gut barrier and stress response are studied in clinical and preclinical work. It holds EFSA QPS status.

Applications

Supplements positioned around digestive comfort and mental well-being are its main field; it is a reference species for product development in the "psychobiotic" category. Its subspecies are frequently used in infant and child formulations, and it serves as an adjunct culture in fermented dairy.

Technical properties and stability
